In a sector as critical as medical devices, patient safety and regulatory compliance are absolute priorities. Therefore, having a specific and certified quality management system, such as the one established by the ISO 13485:2016 standard, is not only a competitive advantage, but a regulatory and strategic necessity.

In this article, from Ambit Iberia, we explain why this standard is essential, how to implement it, and what benefits it brings to healthcare sector organizations.

What is ISO 13485?

The ISO 13485 standard is an international standard designed specifically for organizations that design, develop, manufacture, install, or provide services related to medical devices. Its main objective is to guarantee quality and safety throughout the entire life cycle of the product, from its conception to its final use by professionals and patients.

Although it shares many principles with ISO 9001, ISO 13485 is oriented toward regulatory requirements and risk management applied specifically to the healthcare field. It is compatible with ISO 9001, but does not replace it, as the latter is focused on broader industrial sectors.

Why is it crucial to implement a Quality Management System according to ISO 13485?

The implementation of this standard guarantees consistent quality in medical devices and is directly related to:

  • Patient safety
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Operational capacity of the company

Furthermore, it ensures that medical devices are not only functional and effective, but also compliant with both regulatory and customer requirements.

Key differences between ISO 13485 and ISO 9001

Below, we present a comparative table between the ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards:

Key steps to implement a QMS based on ISO 13485

  1.  Obtain the ISO 13485:2016 standard.
  2.  Define the scope of application: Quality policy and system manual.
  3.  Perform a GAP analysis, especially if ISO 9001 is already implemented.
  4.  Identify additional requirements needed to comply with the standard.
  5.  Develop an action plan: tasks, responsible parties, documentation, resources, and timelines.
  6.  Design and implement system documentation.
  7.  Train the personnel involved.
  8.  Execute the plan and launch the quality management system.

How to obtain and maintain ISO 13485 certification

Once the system is implemented, these are the steps to certify it:

    1. Internal audits and management review.
    2.  Select an accredited certification body.
    3.  Pass the external certification audit.
    4. Superar la auditoría de certificación externa.
    5.  Obtain the certification (valid for 3 years).
    6.  Perform annual surveillance audits to maintain certification.

Benefits of ISO 13485:2016 certification

Certification not only opens doors in commercial terms, but also demonstrates a firm commitment to patient safety and quality. Its main advantages include:

  • Guarantees patient safety and product efficacy.
  • Enables collaboration with large companies and public bodies.
  • Reinforces brand reputation and trust.
  • Facilitates expansion into new international markets.
  • Improves document management and internal efficiency.
  • Increases customer satisfaction and, consequently, business results.
